Song Yuquan

Member of China Democratic League and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), he was born on the twelfth day of June, 1933 (in the Chinese lunar calendar) and graduated from the Department of Physics of Nankai University in 1955. He published nearly 70 academic papers in the field of superplasticity. He taught 14 courses and supervised 13 masters and 4 doctoral candidates. He was also an editorial board member of Science China, Chinese Science Bulletin, Journal of Mechanical Engineering and Journal of Astronautics.

Work experience

From 1955 to 1979, he taught in the Teaching and Research Department of Physics, Metallographic Phase, and Forging and Pressing successively in Jilin University of Technology (JUT). In 1979, he was promoted to Associate Professor of metal forming and later Professor in 1985. In 1987, he acted as Adjunct Professor of JUT Department of Applied Physics. In 1992, he was rated as a doctoral supervisor by the State Education Commission (the current Ministry of Education). He initiated the establishment of the Superplasticity Laboratory in 1988 and the Institute of Superplasticity and Plasticity in 1994. In 1997, he was chosen as an academician of China Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Awards

A Fourth Prize in the State Natural Science Award, a First Prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award by the State Education Commission, a Second Prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award by the State Education Commission, a Third Prize in the Science and Technology Progress Award by the Electrical and Mechanical Department.

Li Yuanyuan

Male, Han ethnicity, born in October 1958 in Meixian County, Guangdong Province, he is an engineering PhD, professor, doctoral supervisor, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). Currently he is the President of Jilin University (JLU) and Chairman of the Chinese Materials Research Society.

He has long been engaged in the teaching and research of material processing engineering and mechanical engineering, achieving a number of important outcomes in the preparation and forming theory and technology of high-performance powder metallurgy materials as well as non-ferrous alloy materials, and material- process- equipment- product integration and engineering, etc, which have not only promoted the technological progress of the industry, but also enhanced the national defense capability of China. He has presided over and undertaken 12 national projects (subjects) under the National Natural Science Foundation, the national “973” and “863” Programs, the National Key Program in Science and Technology, and National Science and Technology Infrastructure Program; 12 national defense and military programs; and 46 others. He has won two Second Prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Award (both as the person-in-charge), 4 First Prizes (3 as the person-in-charge), 2 Second Prizes (both as the person-in-charge), and 3 Third Prizes (2 as the person-in-charge) in ministerial- and provincial-level science and technology awards, a Second Prize in the Guangdong “Torch” Program, and a First Prize in the Guangzhou Municipal Science and Technology Progress Award. He has obtained 40 authorized invention patents, 7 utility model patents and 3 software copyrights, and has won a China Patent Excellence Award and a Guangdong Patent Gold Award. He has published 216 scientific and academic papers (including 92 recorded by SCI, 152 by EI and 39 by ISTP); 2 monographs, 1 textbook, and participated in the compilation of 3 books. He has supervised and trained 7 postdoctoral students, 25 doctoral candidates and 27 master students, and won 1 first prize and 2 second prizes in national teaching achievements.

In 1999, he was selected into the “New Century Outstanding Talent Training Program” of the Ministry of Education. In 2003, he was supported by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Other honors include Advanced Science and Technology Professionals in Guangdong universities during the 7th Five-Year Plan period (1991), 100 Promising New Teachers of Guangzhou (1991), Experts with State Council Special Allowance (1992), the third Ding Ying Science and Technology Award of Guangdong Province (1993), the Fourth China Youth Science and Technology Award (1994), the second Top Ten Outstanding Youth of Guangdong Province (1995), Excellent Teachers of Southern Guangdong Province (1995), Third prize of Guanghua Science and Technology Fund (1995), Outstanding Party Member of Guangdong Universities (1996), Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Experts of Guangdong Province (1996), Advanced Individual Excellence Award of “the 1000, 100, and 10 Project” in Guangdong Universities (2001), Advanced Individuals (2002) and National Training Candidates (2002) of the same project, Outstanding Core Teachers in institutions of higher learning of the Ministry of Education (2002), etc. In 2005, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science by the University of Glamorgan. The discipline teams led by him have been awarded the Advanced Team of Guangdong Province, Innovation Team of the Ministry of Education, Excellent Team of the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province, and the first batch of Advanced Teams of “the 1000, 100, and 10 Project” in Guangdong Universities.

In October 1973, he was dispatched to work in the countryside and remote areas. He joined the Communist Party of China in November 1981. In June the following year, he graduated from the casting major of Hunan University and then from the South China University of Technology (SCUT) with a master’s degree in casting (metallic material and heat treatment) in June 1987. In July 1998, he graduated from SCUT with a doctoral degree in mechanical manufacturing (part-time). From June 1982 to August 1984, he worked at the Teaching and Research Office of Casting, Department of Mechanics, Hunan University. From June 1987 to date he has been teaching at SCUT Department of Mechanical Engineering (current School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering). He was promoted to associate professor in January 1992, then exceptionally to professor in December 1993, and to doctoral supervisor in December 1998. In December 1992, he was appointed as deputy director of the Foundry and Composite Office. In 1994, he acted as the Deputy Director of the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and member of the University Party Committee. From February to May 1997, he visited the Institute of Metallic Physics of Berlin Technical University as a senior scholar to engage in cooperative scientific research. In October 2004, he was appointed as director of Guangdong Key Laboratory of New Metal Material Preparation and Forming. In June 2006, he was appointed as director of the Engineering Research Center of The Ministry of Education for New Metal Material Preparation and Forming Technology and Equipment. In May 2008, he started to serve as the director of the Key Laboratory of High Efficiency Near Net Forming Technology and Equipment of Metal Materials under the Ministry of Education (Category B). In December 2009, he became the director of the National Research Center of Metal Material Near Net Forming Engineering Technology. In 1998, he became the Vice President of SCUT, member of the Standing Committee of the University Party Committee, and director of the Research and Development Center of New Metal Material Preparation and Forming. From March 1999 to November 2000, he served concurrently as Deputy Secretary of SCUT Party Committee; In September, 2003, he became the President and Member of the Standing Committee of SCUT Party Committee. Since September 2011, he has been the president (Vice-ministerial level) of Jilin University.
