From December 10 to 14, 2023, Professor Cui Xiaoqiang, Vice Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Yang Meichen, International Affairs Secretary, together with 26 doctoral students from Jilin University, paid an official visit to Korea University and Hanyang University. The visit aimed to advance in-depth cooperation between the two universities in academic research, talent training and technological innovation, and further boost disciplinary development and internationalization.
On December 11, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Signing Ceremony was held between the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of Korea University and the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Jilin University at Korea University. The document was jointly signed by Professor Lee In-Hwan, Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Korea University, and Professor Cui Xiaoqiang, Vice Dean of Jilin University’s School of Materials Science and Engineering.
From December 11 to 12, Korea University hosted the student-led workshop entitled 2024 KU-JLU Student-Led Workshop on Smart Materials and Devices. At the opening ceremony, Professor Cui Xiaoqiang from Jilin University and Professor Lee In-Hwan from Korea University delivered speeches respectively. They reviewed the existing cooperation foundation between the two institutions in materials science, highlighted their distinctive disciplinary strengths, briefed the participants on workshop preparation, and outlined visions for future collaboration. Centered on cutting-edge disciplinary issues, the workshop sought to strengthen exchanges among young researchers from both sides and facilitate tangible cooperation projects.
Ten outstanding doctoral students from Jilin University’s School of Materials and ten doctoral students from Korea University delivered academic presentations in turn, showcasing the latest research advances in novel material design, processing technologies and application exploration. During the academic exchange sessions, faculty and doctoral researchers from both sides engaged in thorough discussions on key technologies and research orientations, inspiring fresh research ideas and opening up new avenues for collaboration. Following the workshop, the Jilin University delegation toured campus laboratories and research facilities, witnessing the state-of-the-art experimental infrastructure and vibrant innovation ecosystem at Korea University.
Professor Cui Xiaoqiang remarked that Jilin University and Korea University share extensive cooperation foundations and overlapping disciplinary strengths in materials science. He expressed the hope that both sides would further deepen research collaboration based on current achievements, launch joint research projects, build high-level international academic exchange platforms, offer more opportunities for academic interaction and joint research to faculty and students of both universities, and elevate the development of materials science and engineering disciplines at both institutions to new heights.
On December 13, accompanied by staff from the International Office of Hanyang University, the delegation visited the Hanyang University History Museum to gain an in-depth understanding of the university’s development trajectory and educational philosophy. The group then toured the university library and VR Laboratory, experiencing firsthand the innovative applications of virtual reality technology in engineering education and scientific research, which demonstrated Hanyang University’s advanced educational models and technological advantages in interdisciplinary fields.
Additionally, the delegation visited the Confucius Institute at Hanyang University, a joint initiative founded by Jilin University and Hanyang University to promote China-South Korea cultural exchange and collaborative talent training. Professor Kwon Hyuk-Ryul, Director of the Confucius Institute, welcomed students from Jilin University to pursue short-term exchange programs, research collaborations or degree studies at Hanyang University. He looked forward to seeing students from both universities achieve cross-cultural and interdisciplinary growth amid an internationalized academic environment.
This visit strengthened international academic exchanges and cooperation between the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Jilin University, Korea University and Hanyang University, expanding collaborative scope in disciplinary development, research innovation and talent cultivation. Moving forward, leveraging the jointly established seminar mechanism and research cooperation platforms, the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Jilin University will focus on global frontiers of materials science and engineering, jointly tackle core key technologies, promote interdisciplinary integration and collaborative innovation, and contribute to addressing major international engineering and technological challenges.
