Introduction to the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Jilin University
The School of Materials Science and Engineering of Jilin University is located in Changchun, Jilin, China. Founded in 1955 initially as the Changchun Automobile and Tractor School, it was merged with the former Department of Materials Science of Jilin University, School of Materials Science and Engineering of Jilin University of Technology, School of Materials Science and Engineering of Changchun University of Technology in 2000 to form the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Jilin University as we know today.
The School consists of five departments, i.e. materials science, metal materials engineering, polymer materials and engineering, inorganic non-metallic materials engineering, and material processing engineering. It has 10 provincial- and ministerial-level research platforms, including the Key Laboratory of Automotive Materials of the Ministry of Education, the Innovation and Talent Base for New Energy Vehicle Materials, the Key Laboratory of Light Alloy Precision Processing and Manufacturing of Jilin Province, the Key Laboratory of International Science and Technology Cooperation on Efficient and Clean Energy Materials of Jilin Province, the Engineering Research Center for Resource Utilization of Solid Waste of Jilin Province, and the Engineering Research Center for Metal Materials and Processing Technology of Jilin Province. The School currently offers four bachelor's programs, four master's programs and four doctoral programs. At present, it has 125 full-time teachers, including 75 professors and 38 associate professors, forming a knowledgeable faculty well balanced in age structure and academic ranks to support sustainable development.
The School has many distinctive advantages, such as full coverage of disciplines, combined strength of science and engineering disciplines, and coordinated development among industries, universities, and research. Its teaching and research quality ranks among the top in China. Its ESI has ranked among the top 1% in the world since 2004, and made it into the top 1 ‰ since 2014 (only 4 disciplines in Jilin University enter the top 1 ‰, 34th on the newest ranking). In 2017, disciplines of the School were included in the first batch of "Double First-class" construction disciplines of the Ministry of Education and made it into the list again in 2022 (only 6 disciplines in Jilin University were included).
During its nearly 70 years of development, the School has achieved outstanding results in basic research in fields such as the physics and chemistry of low-dimensional materials, theoretical calculation and design of materials, advanced energy catalysts, high-performance metallic materials, automotive materials and processing technology. Many of its research directions have reached international leading levels. Research results were published in Nature, Nat. Nanotech., Nat. Rev. Mater., Nat. Commun., Adv. Mater., Acta Mater., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. and other highly influential journals; In terms of applied research, its new high-end cylinder block in grey cast iron was applied by FAW on a large scale to solve technology bottlenecks; The new high-strength superplastic magnesium alloy and key preparation technology filled the gap in the industry. The multi-point digital forming flexible manufacturing technology and equipment served national defense development and enabled the integration of industry and research. 10 researchers were selected by Clarivate as "Highly Cited Researchers around the Globe", and 24 researchers were rated by Elsevier as "Highly Cited Scholars from China".
In the future, the School will continue to focus on international frontier issues and key technologies in the materials industry, respond to new patterns of competition in the global new materials industry, and promote the rapid development of materials science and materials engineering industries.
