The discipline was established in 1958 by the former Jilin University of Technology, and it was authorized master’s degree program in 1986 and doctoral degree program in 1997. After the merger in 2000, the discipline was composed of related majors in the former Jilin University of Technology and Changchun University of Science and Technology. It was rated as one of the key disciplines at the national level in 2008. Various research fields of materials are covered including metallic materials, inorganic non-metallic materials, polymer materials and composite materials. It is particularly featured by covering all fields of materials science in its research. It also has its own characteristics in the fields of functional materials, nanomaterials and automotive materials. It has the Key Laboratory of Automotive Materials (Jilin University) of Ministry of Education, Automotive Materials Engineering Center of Jilin Province, Open Laboratory for Functional Minerals Application Basis and Physicochemical Properties Testing Methods of Ministry of Land and Resources, and the Institute of Non-metallic Minerals and Materials Application of Jilin Province.

Faculty and Staff

There are 46 faculty members teaching in the discipline, and they are mainly graduates returning from abroad. There are 23 professors, including 16 doctoral supervisors. One of them is a member of the Science & Technology Commission of the Ministry of Education. One was selected as one of the young and middle-aged scholars with outstanding contributions. Two won “National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars”. One was awarded “Trans-century Talents Project of the Ministry of Education”. Two were awarded “New Century Talents Project of the Ministry of Education”. One was selected as the first and second level of the Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project of the Ministry of Human Resources. Four returned to China after receiving their doctoral degrees from the United States, Germany and France. The continuous improvement of staff quality has facilitated the building of a well-structured research team with the pursuit of unity, diligence, competition and success as well as the prospect of sustainable development.

Talent Cultivation

Since 2006, it has produced 77 doctoral candidates, 205 postgraduate students and 1 postdoctoral fellow.

One was awarded one of the 2010 National Top 100 Excellent Doctoral Theses. Seven participated in National University Doctoral Forum for three sessions. Among all graduate students, 12 of them have been awarded scholarships by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lenovo Group, Tang Aoqing, etc.
