Research Field
We are mainly engaged in efficient electrocatalysis and in-situ dynamic characterization. We focus on the in-situ enhancement mechanism and structure-properties relationship of electrocatalytic materials in the electrochemical energy conversion process and thus provide the guidance for developing highly-active, durable, and low-cost electrocatalysts. As such, we adopt a strategy that closely combines the advanced in-situ characterization techniques, the controllable synthesis, and the first principles calculation in order to acquire a fundamental understanding of electrocatalysis at the atomic/molecular level and under working conditions. We also actively cooperate with the industry to transform our knowledge to realistic products regarding the production of highly-efficiency electrocatalysts. As the first/corresponding author, Prof. Zhao has published papers in international journals such as Science, J. am. Chem. SOC., Adv. Mater., Energy Environ. SCI., ACS catalyst. As a project assistant professor, he worked on the project of NEDO polyelectrolyte membrane fuel cell with total funding of more than 1 billion yen. The developed oxygen reduction electrocatalyst by him has been reported by Nikkei news.
